چکیده

The importance of Ireland’s wetlands for waterbirds is well documented (Crowe 2005, Boland & Crowe 2012), and the most recent population estimates indicate that more than one million wildfowl and waders winter in Ireland (Crowe et al. 2008). The Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) in Northern Ireland and Britain, together with the equivalent scheme in the Republic of Ireland, the Irish Wetland Bird Survey (I-WeBS), are Ireland’s ongoing monitoring systems for wintering waterbirds. They have been in operation each winter since the early 1990s, and between 300 and 400 sites are monitored annually (Holt et al. 2011, Boland & Crowe 2012). Coastal urbanization and the integrity of estuarine waterbird communities: Threshold responses and the importance of scale

Estuarine ecosystems are becoming increasingly altered by the concentration of human populations near the coastline, however a robust indicator of this change is lacking. We developed an index of waterbird community integrity (IWCI) and tested its sensitivity to anthropogenic activities within 28 watersheds and associated subestuaries of Chesapeake Bay, USA. The IWCI was used as a tool to gain ...

Land Cover and Rainfall Interact to Shape Waterbird Community Composition

Human land cover can degrade estuaries directly through habitat loss and fragmentation or indirectly through nutrient inputs that reduce water quality. Strong precipitation events are occurring more frequently, causing greater hydrological connectivity between watersheds and estuaries. Nutrient enrichment and dissolved oxygen depletion that occur following these events are known to limit popula...

Estimates of waterbird numbers wintering in Ireland , 2006 / 07 – 2010 / 11

Estimates of total bird numbers help to evaluate the importance of a site for a species within a national and international framework, and also the relative importance of each country for that species which helps to prioritise conservation action and management. Non-breeding waterbirds, which are generally gregarious in nature, have been used to identify the importance of more than 80 wetland s...

Irish Wetland Bird Survey: Results of Waterbird Monitoring in Ireland

Ireland supports a high diversity and large numbers of high latitude-nesting waterfowl during the non-breeding season. Located at the southern edge of the major flyways of many species, its mild climate ensures that feeding is rarely interrupted by freezing conditions. Some species migrate here, while others use Ireland as a stopover site, while en route to more southerly wintering areas. We th...

The present research article highlights the metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe)distribution pattern in the RSPM generated in different hot spot sites located at Kochi, theQueen of Arabian Sea. These sampling sites are categorized under three different zonesas estuarine, riverine, and coastal. Two sampling phases are selected in order to check theconsistency in pollution trend after a two year gap and...
